My Home Vet provides holistic and standard veterinary care to companion animals in their own homes. Services include annual physical exams, vaccinations, illness diagnoses and treatment, support for chronic long-term diseases (cancer, allergies, cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, etc.) hospice for geriatric pets, and finally end of life (which comprises a large part of this practice).
By working in the home, owners find their pets are far less stressed and the convenience invaluable. We all know the familiar scene of trying to get the resistant cat into a carrier or the car-sick dog fearing the car ride, slick clinic floors or unfamiliar places. In-home services help to reduce so many stressors, unnecessary especially in sick animals. The client is charged by the hour not by the number of pets, so multiple pets often can be seen for less than the cost of bringing them all to a clinic; and the stress of transportation is happily avoided.
Dr. Wright grew up in New Jersey watching her mother rescue wild animals among the menagerie of their pet dogs and cats. Exposure to so many critters (insects, small mammals, birds, snakes, lizards and of course, dogs and cats) kindled her interest in animal care throughout life. Her horse became the main focus during junior high and high school as she trained and showed in 3-day eventing. That passion took her through her first year at a private college in Virginia, studying horsemanship and business. She then transferred to Old Dominion University and finished with a biology degree in 1991. Many interests were investigated (including ecology and entomology), but her long-term career with animals began with her first job at a veterinary hospital in South Carolina.
From there, she quit to start a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation organization, seeing a profound need in that community. The success of that organization was instrumental later in life. The seed was planted to be the vet during that project (instead of just working for one). After moving to Oregon in 1995, she temporarily worked at the local humane society in Corvallis for 2 ½ years. From there she began vet school in 1997 at Oregon State University.
Animals have always been a huge part of her life – she has rescued many puppies, kittens, adult dogs and cats, passing through her home and heart before moving on. Pocket pets and ferrets hold a special place for various reasons. Her practice as a holistic vet is currently limited to dogs and cats while her knowledge base is expanding, but will likely include all (4-legged) animals in the future.
